Hofpleinlijn Highline Masterplan

/ (1 of 1)

The Hofpleinlijn, taken in service in 1908, was the first electric rail line in the Netherlands. The rail line connects Scheveningen with Rotterdam. A part of the rail line consists a high line with a length of 2 kilometers, with its start point in the city center of Rotterdam.
Around 2010 the high line on the viaduct will be disbanded. So, now it has huge potential to redevelop the old high line trace to an attractive, green walking promenade. The characteristic structure of concrete arches under the high line, now mainly in use as storage units, will get a new function: exposition spaces, ateliers, international shops and other small scale activity.

More public gathering spaces are needed around the highline. At present, the public space around the Highline doesn't invite to stay. Most spaces around the Highline are passageways for local traffic. Houses and public buildings are on several places not oriented on the Highline. A square, a small park, a street-courtyard and an acces square will be added to the existing public gathering spaces around the Highline. These gathering spaces are linked immediate to a prominent stairway to the deck of the Highline. At present the highline has an abrubt end in the city center of Rotterdam. The highline is hided behind the railroad-viaduct to Rotterdam central station. The new 'Hofpleinlijn residential tower' bridged the viaduct and creates a generous entrance to the deck of the Highline-park.
