Broeinesten

This project draws a border. If we stop to stretching the city edges with VINEX-areas and industrial districts, we can develop existing suburbs to living quarters with its own character and urbanity. This is a win win situation: we save rural space and the existing suburbs will become more vivid.

'BROEINESTEN', a Dutch word for hotbeds, has to transform existing suburbs from anonymous dormitory towns to urban neighborhoods with distinctive dynamics. Embedding 'BROEINESTEN' strategically in existing neighborhoods will break with the monopoly of dwellings in these dormitory towns.

A 'BROEINEST' has a rigid frame with a characteristic appearance. Different units within the building can be combined and offer the user as a range of possibilities for his own substance to the building. A car showroom, a grocery shop, exhibition space or a studio, it all belongs to the possibilities. There are also built in opportunities to expand the house with an office space to match the growing trend of telecommuting.

A 'BROEINEST' has a strong link with the public life and thus provide an unprecedented number of new activities and opportunities to the city. This is partly due to the wide porch as a transition between the private and public domain. 'BROEINESTEN' are growing 'bottom up' rather than 'top down', they offer opportunities for unexpected twists in the ever-changing city. The suburbs will transform through these 'BROEINESTEN' from uniform neighbourhoods to places with their own social and cultural environment.
