Paper, Informal City, Urban Planning

Open publication - Free publishing - More brazil

This paper starts with explaining the self-built favela neighbourhoods in Brazil: a spontaneous and continuous evolving, but coherent way of self constructing living habitats. A strong the internal logic takes shape in these informal neighbourhoods despite the absence of any formal mechanisms of planning. The emergence of informal neighbourhoods is not common in Western Europe. Brazilian cities have often self-built neighborhoods in its peripheries: for instance, in São Paulo the informal city arose next to the formal city, and contains 20 percent of the megalopolis' inhabitants (4 million people on a total of 19,8 million)i. Without trivializing the large social and safety problems in the favela, I explore in this paper the distinctive positive aspects of the favela: user-central (self) building, autonomy due to flexibility. With a surprisingly strong internal logic neighborhood as a result, despite the absence of planning. To make a balance I explore also the positive characteristics of open process and compare them with the disadvantages of open process in the favela. Finally a give my opinion about self-construction and the open process, is it a good system for Brazil for the future?

Image 1: existing situation

Image 3: alternative design for an extension

The detached dwelling, on the sketch seen from the road, has a architypical housing shape and a volumous appearance. But unfortunately the front plane of the facade has a dull expression. The extension breaks with the dull expression, without toning down the strong volumous appearance and the architypical shape of the dwelling.

A rounded facade makes the theatre for students of the Amstelcampus distinguishing and eye-catching compared with the other rectangular shaped office buildings on the campus.

The facade is engineered and technically drawn scale 1:20 and 1:5. The facade is a rounded second skin facade to protect the theatre performances inside the building against traffic noise caused by the traffic alongside the busy main route adjacent to the building.

With the professional Maya 7 rendering program I rendered a scenario, based on the chorus of the song 'Street Spirit', by the British band Radiohead. The interpretation of the songtext, musical ritm, composition and ambience has been translated into a 3 dimensional scenario [built up in Maya 7]. The optimisation of the light effects, colors and contrasts has been performed in adobe photoshop CS3.

This project is an investigation of the fysical and ecological possibilities of water, while also benefitting its social, recreational and architectural qualities. The design attempts to make the shore of the river part of the architectural experience inside the building.

In everyday life spaces on the edge between water and land (like the beaches, quays and dikes) are pertinently one of the major places where people gather, recreate and relax together. The concept for the building shape creates such as space on microlevel inside the building. It is an unique place with its own artificial qualities as an supplement on the existing qualities of the rivershore. It's a place for ultimate relaxation in the form of different thermal baths, gardens and sauna's, benefiting from the restful riverscenery.

The scenery accomodates short stay apartments between landside and riverside of the complex. The apartments are intented for retired people who wants to flee the prosperity of the fast changing world. Both for health reasons as for the deserved tranquility after a life of hard working. The short stay apartments are designed fully weelchair accessible, to pay attention to the constraints of the intended users.
On riverside of the building a wharf creates some unplanned (informal) vitality around the rivershore: residents can more with their small boats, visitors will walk alongside the river shore, families has the opportunity to live with a houseboat on the river and residents can sit in the sun on one of the wharf terraces.

Playful exploring is in conventional daycare centers restricted to one room where children spend most time of the day. This is against the needs of children, especially children in the age range 6 to 12 years old.
The conventional program of the children’s daycare center has been placed into an labyrinthine floor plan, to give substance to the need for self-exploring a (micro) world. Group spaces, in the form of closed glass volumes, are spread all over the labyrinth. To make playful learning possible, a mediatheque and a library are crucial elements of the plan. A glass roof above the labyrinth increases the experience of being outdoors, especially in contradiction to the closed group spaces. And it strengthens the continuous routing in the labyrinth. The glass roof is also part of a smart climatization concept, based on a greenhouse, to reduce the carbon dioxide emissions significantly. And to realize a comfortable and healthy climate for children.

Hoge Vught, a 60’s neighourhood in the North of Breda, is a typical postwar city extension with large open spaces, and a strict repetition of housing blocks inside these open spaces. Prominent in Hoge Vught are the parkways. These wide roads - with a big plot of green
at both sides - divide the district in 3 smaller parts. It was projected to divide it in four parts, but the parkway to the North has never been built. The district centre of Hoge Vught is there where 4 neighbourhoods come together, at the crossroad of the three Parkways.

Onfortunately this centre presents itself not as a representative heart for the neigbourhood. A big and desolate parking plot is used as main entrance to the covered shopping centre. Lively streets are absent, and the covered street is only open during shopping hours.
Most shops are faced to the covered street - and has no interaction with the public space around the mall - with as a result that most buildings has a closed ground floor facade without contact with the exterior streets.

The basic concept for the shopping streets - developed by Broek Bakema - is a good working spatial structure to keep in stance. This shopping concept is improved with an second inner square, and extended with one extra main shopping street, and with extra entrance’s around the shopping centre to connect it better with the surrounding neighbourhoods. I remove the covering of the streets , to make it real public space again. The entrances to the shopping streets are everywhere around the city centre, and are made more inviting to enter. One square presents the shopping centre to the district, it is located near the Parkway. It is used as market for fresh food products. Around this square the consumer can obtain fresh cheese, bread, fish, meat, vegetables, fruits, flowers and products for body care. The care centre is also located nearby this square. The inner square is a cosy square, with an intimate atmosphere, with pubs, a restaurant, library and a cultural centre. The edges of the shopping centre will be used as a ‘shop-and-ride’ area. A big amount of parkingplaces are located here, in good proximity to the shopping centre. These shops around are used for a quick visit: to for example to shop in the supermarket, to pick up some sigaretes or a DVD -video, for take-away of some chinese food, to visit the bank, or to bring your bike to a bike-repair-centre. We offer the 'shop-and-ride' area a 24-h shopping program, to make the edges of the shopping centre lively and safe during day and night caused by the continuous coming and going cars.
